Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion

Lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) is a minimally invasive surgery used to treat disc problems in the lower back including spinal conditions such as degenerative disc disease, degenerative scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, and disc herniation. Through a small incision at the side of the waist, the damaged intervertebral disc is removed and a spacer bone graft is inserted to restore height between the bones and relieve nerve pinching.  The graft becomes a bridge between two bones to facilitate fusion. As the body begins healing, new cells grow around the graft and the two vertebrae fuse into one solid piece of bone.
